The NIC wishes to improve the quality as well as sustain the heritage of the fraternity community. This educational mission is conducted in harmony with other organizations and associations sharing common interests. NIC services include a forum for information exchange. The NIC sponsors an Annual Meeting and brings fraternity leaders together for workshops, discussions, and cooperative actions.
The Council
The council represents all fraternities who follow NIC guidelines. A list of these fraternities are found
here . Currently, there are ten fraternities that represent the NIC at San Jose State University. These include the fraternities of Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, Delta Sigma Phi, Theta Chi, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha.
History of Greek Life at San Jose State
Fraternity and sorority life at SJSU has a long and varied history of nearly 110 years.
1898
First sorority at SJSU and any California Normal School
1901
First men's social fraternity at SJSU. In the early 1900's and 1910's, several literary societies form that would later become fraternities and sororities.
1919
First Intersociety Council
1920's
Men's social fraternities formed into precursors for current groups
1930's
Local fraternities recognized by SJSU. SJSU's Interfraternity Council forms in 1935, with NIC guidance in 1948
1947-48
National groups allowed to be recognized on campus. Local groups become National. SJSU's Panhellenic Council forms in 1948
1950's
First fraternity founded at SJSU for a specific cultural interest with the first African American interest fraternity forming.
1970's
Vietnam War. Greek Membership drops. Chapters close, vacating large houses around campus. First sorority founded at SJSU for a specific cultural interest with the formation of the first African American interest sorority.
Late 1980's
First Asian American interest, Latino/a interest, and multicultural interest groups form. SJSU Greek system grows.
1990's
Period of development and education for the trend-setting SJSU Greek community. First all-Greek lettered organization meetings. SJSU's National Pan-Hellenic Council forms in 1998.
2000's
We currently have 35 recognized social Greek chapters at SJSU. We are among the most diverse and unique Greek communities in the nation. SJSU's United Sorority and Fraternity Council forms in 2003.

IFC Achieves highest cumulative GPA, being above all men's and all person university average
